Communications Spectrum

Federal agencies that manage the commercial and public communications spectrum:

  • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) - is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.
  • National Telecommunications and Information Association - A bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is the President's principal adviser on telecommunications and information policy issues, and in this role frequently works with other Executive Branch agencies to develop and present the Administration's position on these issues.

Standards bodies working to promote interoperable communications technology:

Project 25 - Project 25 is a set of standards produced by the joint effort of APCO, NTIA, and NASTD, and standardized under the TIA.

Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International, Inc (APCO) - APCO International is the world's largest organization dedicated to public safety communications.

Capital Wireless Integrated Network (CapWIN) - is a partnership between the State of Maryland, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the District of Columbia to develop an interoperable first responder data communication and information sharing network.
